APPLES BACK ON AMERICAN SOIL
China Tour A Success

"Incredible, simply incredible" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt when asked to describe the Apples just completed trip to China. "We've have all heard that you really don't know how great we have it here in America until you go away and see things from a different angle. I now know first hand how true those words are" said Bernitt as he battled the effects of his 31 hour travel day that started at the Ritz Carlton in Shanghai, China and ended when he pulled back into the Apples Nashville compound early Sunday morning.
"We had the gift of being able to see and hear so many incredible things that it is just about impossible to explain it all" said Bernitt as he drank his first truly cold drink in almost two weeks. "I take so much for granted" continued Bernitt as he explained that the water in China can not be consumed by westerners due to the high mineral content which of course bars one from using ice and therefore leads to lots of cool or warm soda, bottled water and beer. "I guess our idea and the Chi Coms idea of cold is different, because we never had a ice cold drink our entire trip" added Bernitt as he slammed his 3rd cold beer in his first hour back on American soil.
In an even greater then normal daze following the grueling trip home, Bernitt briefly explained a few highlights of the Apples goodwill tour which began with a 13 hour non stop flight from New York City to Beijing. "That was pretty cool, we actually headed due North out of JFK and flew over the top of the world, across the North Pole and south to Beijing." "I'm pretty sure I got a picture of Santa's workshop but I'll have to wait to get a look at the pictures to be sure" added Bernitt.
Upon arriving in China, the Apples were immediately confronted by the Chinese Red Army to ensure all paperwork and visa's were intact and current. Following admission into the country, Bernitt and fellow Apple Patty Pender, along with Bernitt's father Dan, and nephew Matty Oliver, headed to the heart of Beijing and within hours found themselves standing in the middle of the now infamous Tiananmen Square. "It was surreal" said Pender when asked what crossed her mind as she stood on the spot that is the history of the 1989 Tiananmmen Square Massacre. Pender also pointed out that the city of Beijing, with a population of near 17 million people, is now a very polluted city.."Just picture a grey cloudy day and then imagine the cloud hanging down to ground level" continued Pender as she described the irritating air quality of the city. Along with all else in Beijing, Pender confirmed that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people riding bikes. "Anywhere, anytime, there are throngs of people on bikes" said Pender.
After several days in Beijing, which included visits to the Olympic venues of the 'Birds Nest' and 'Water Cube' the Apples toured the 800 year old Forbidden City before venturing out for a 2 1/2 hike along the Great Wall of China. "The Wall is amazing" said Bernitt as he described the 3,000 mile structure that is regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.. "It's very difficult to walk" said Pender as she explained that it is almost never flat and instead flows up and down as it follows the mountains of China. "To make it tougher" added Pender, "the steps up and down are not the steps we are accustomed to, instead they are half size steps which throw your stride off." Pender then pointed out that one hill tackled by the Apples included a stretch of 454 steps up before reaching a flat surface and a few minutes of relief.
From Beijing, the Apples caught a 2 hour domestic Air China flight south to the city of Xing for a visit to what is commonly know as 'The Terracotta Soldiers' The sight, discovered just 20 years ago, has come to be learned to have been the burial sight for an ancient Chinese Emperor.. In his burial tomb stands thousands of life size Terracotta Soldiers meant to protect him as he headed to the after world.. "Another amazing day and sight" Bernitt said as he recalled the visit to the long buried army.
Next up for the Apple delegation was a treat to behold. As special guest of the Penn State Astronomy Department, and in conjunction of Peking University, the Apples traveled to the mountain tops of Anji, China where they had the awesome experience of witnessing a Total Solar Eclipse. "Again, words can not describe it" said Bernitt as he attempted to relay what it is to see this rare celestial event. "The eclipse was an 4 hour spectacular that I will never forget" continued Bernitt. " For the first two hours we of course wore specific protective eye glasses that allowed us to follow the shadow of the moon as it blocked the sun. When the eclipse went 'Total' we then witnessed with our naked eyes the awesome sight of seeing only a white outer ring of the sun in what is known as the Corona. It was stunning." Bernitt then told of the HD Video that he took of this moment and how he and others are heard repeating the same word time after time.. WOW! WOW! WOW! is all that is heard and can only be described as an involuntary reaction to a sight never before seen by the Apples. "Seeing that was worth the price of admission by itself, much less having the chances to see the rest of China as well" concluded Bernitt.
After leaving Anji, the Apples headed off for a few days in the bustling city of Shanghai. A city with over 20 million people, Shanghai was night and day different then the capital of Beijing. Said Pender, "it is a very western like city, very modern and very stylish in the dress of the people as opposed to the dull and drab garb that was Beijing. To describe Shanghai as huge is an under statement. To make a point, Nashville, TN may have 6 or 8 buildings that are over 30 stories tall, in Shanghai, there are 4,000, yes 4,000 buildings over 30 stories tall.. The skyline is very modern as future pictures on this blog will show.
Along their tour of China, the Apples took the advice of future Apple Sue Krawczyk as they made a point to eat anything put in front of them and not to shy away from a dish because of what it was. To this end, the Apples were treated to dishes of Octopus, Jellyfish, Pig Knuckles, Chicken Feet and Duck Brains just to name a few. "When in China" quipped Matty Oliver as he sucked the brains out of fresh catch of shrimp.
On the media and photograph front, Bernitt let it be known that although he has returned to America to begin training for the 2009 fall season, Apple Patty Pender as well as Dan Bernitt and Matty Oliver have remained in China and will not be back for another week. "I left all photography equipment behind and will look forward to sharing pictures and video in a few weeks" said Bernitt.
In the meantime, Bernitt made a point to say that his "big picture" of China is as follows:
In America, perhaps 80% of us are middle class and 10% are very rich and 10% are very poor.. "Do not be fooled" said Bernitt, "In China 80% of the 1.5 Billion people are very poor and live in poverty." "They have no passion, no purpose and no future." "It is not a pretty thing to see and I don't want to hear that 'they don't know any better'. "It's a damn shame, and each and everyone of us should be oh so thankful to have what we have." "I have no doubt", said Bernitt, "we are the most fortunate people alive, and yes, America is the greatest country on earth."

RED APPLES
Apples Go International
This past Springs temporary suspension of team operations, which took the Apples off of the playing field for the first time in a decade, appears now to have been a course of action that could in the end, benefit the Nashville based Coed Softball giant.
Forced to suspend play due to the lack of talent in Nashville, it has been announced that the Apples have elected to extend their reach and have begun a national, as well as international tryout schedule in hopes of fielding a team for the upcoming fall schedule of the Granny White Coed Softball League.
A recent weekend tryout in San Francisco identified several potential players who were signed to the practice squad while waiting to hear the leagues final ruling on allowing trans gender athletes to participate in Coed Softball. "It raises a few questions on the boy - girl - boy - girl batting order" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt when discussing the recent tryout.
With the recent scouting trip to California behind them, the Apples now turn their attention to the international talent pool as they have embarked on a visit to The Peoples Republic of China.
"I hear they have some folks that can swing a mean sickle over there" said Bernitt as he and fellow Apple Patty Pender prepared for the flight from New York City to Beijing. Bernitt added that he hoped his visit behind the bamboo curtain would lead to an increased openness between to the two countries in the arena of International Coed Softball. "That's true Change and Hope we can Believe in" continued Bernitt as he brushed up on his language skills of calling balls and strikes in Chinese.
While in China, the Apples plan on becoming the first Coed Softball team to hold free and open tryouts in a communist country, and at the same hope to become the first Americans to hit softballs over the Great Wall of China. "I'm looking forward at going toe to toe in a pitching matchup against the Red Chinese Army" said Bernitt as he packed his 'Made in China' ball and glove in the overhead bin of team plane Apple 1.
And so it goes, the Apples take to the world and begin to spread their vision of America and Coed Softball. GOD help us all..

GOLDEN APPLES

Following the 2009 season that wasn't, the Apples began their off season tour this past weekend with a trip west to the Salinas Valley and the artichoke and strawberry fields of Watsonville, Ca.
In addition to the day spent in the "Salad Bowl" of America, the Apples also took a step back in time as they retraced the steps of their 1995 visit to California and the San Francisco Bay area.
"What a beautiful city" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt has he and fellow Apple Patty Pender gazed across the bay from the Golden Gate Bridge. "If there was just some way to get the freaks out of here this would be a pretty cool place" added Bernitt as he was pummeled by the high octane winds atop the bridge.
With June now behind us and the summer ready to kick into high gear, it's any ones guess as to where the Apples may show up next. With rumors flourishing of a pending trip to the deep south, one thing is for sure, if you listen for a wind coming from the far east you may will soon hear that now famous cheer..........

Now, as the world lays witness to events taking place in Iran, the Apples have a question; Where are you now?
Do you remember the jokes and scoffs when George Bush called Iraq, Iran and North Korea an "axis of evil"? Where are you now?
Are you watching what is happening in Iran? Are you watching as your brothers and sisters are being murdered in the streets of Iran because they dare to taste the very freedom that many in this country take for granted? Where are you now?
Did you see the young women, Neda Agha Soltan, as she dared to peacefully protest for freedom on the streets of Iran? Did you see her die? Where are you now?
As has been proclaimed by the Apples in the past; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness is not just for white men in America.. This absolute truth is the bedrock for all of GODS children being able to say "Free at Last, Free at Last, thank GOD Almighty, we're Free at Last." Where are you now?

Bailey Announces Change
Takes Game To Hometown Team

Following a ten year run as team swing coach, Apple Jeff Bailey has announced that he will be leaving his current position at the end of the month to assume a similar role with his hometown PFG Pears.
"It's never an easy decision to make a move like this, but I feel it's the right time to do so." said Bailey as he announced his decision to sign a free agent contract that will have him join the Lebanon, TN based Pears.
"I had a nice 10 year run here" said Bailey, "I'll take a lot a fun memories from this job and of course" added Bailey, "this is where I met my wonderful wife, Lisa Bailey Bean. There is not too much bad you can say about a gig like that" concluded Bailey as he loaded his golf clubs in the cab of his truck and headed out for a quick 9 holes as a tune from the band 'Dave's Not Here' blared from the truck stereo
When contacted on vacation for comment on Bailey's decision, Apple Executive Apparel Buyer Don Upton said, " I'm sorry... who is leaving? Jeff? I'm not sure if I know who Jeff is" joked Upton before taking a minute to thank Bailey for his past efforts and to wish him well in his new role.
With the move, Bailey now finds himself in the unique position of working just 10 minutes from home. "It's going to be great" said Jeff, "I look forward to sleeping later and having cocktails earlier"
And so it goes, the Apple tree extends its reach as another Apple leaves and begins to grow again in a new orchard. Just another example of not if, but when we will hear that now famous cheer........

As speculated, it has been confirmed that one time Apple Coach and Buyer, Dennis Miller, has accepted a similar position with the Birmingham, Alabama based Adams Produce conglomerate.
Approached at a pool party and rib cook off in Suburban Nashville to celebrate the upcoming marriage of Apple infielder Tiffany Smith and Professional Bass Fisherman Houston McSwain, Miller said that he had been looking to "get back in the game" since the Apple restructuring that forced him from his position a few years ago.
"This wont be my first rodeo, I'm looking forward to getting back onto the field and kicking some dirt soon" added Miller as he tossed back shots of Patrone to celebrate his pending move.
Miller now joins several other one time Apples who have taken their games from humble beginnings in Nashville and have over time joined up with the Adams ownership group to become a major force in the Southeast United States Coed Softball League.
When then asked about expectations in regards to selling his Nashville home under current market conditions as he prepares to join Adams in Birmingham, Miller surprised well wishers when he replied, "I'm not going anywhere, the position that I have accepted is here in Nashville." Miller then poured another round of Tequila and toasted, "Here's to my new job, and to Christi getting married."
With the announcement of Millers move, we today again see why it is always just a matter of time before we hear that famous cheer.............

Approached at a pool party and rib cook off in Suburban Nashville to celebrate the upcoming marriage of Apple infielder Tiffany Smith and Professional Bass Fisherman Houston McSwain, Miller said that he had been looking to "get back in the game" since the Apple restructuring that forced him from his position a few years ago.
"This wont be my first rodeo, I'm looking forward to getting back onto the field and kicking some dirt soon" added Miller as he tossed back shots of Patrone to celebrate his pending move.
Miller now joins several other one time Apples who have taken their games from humble beginnings in Nashville and have over time joined up with the Adams ownership group to become a major force in the Southeast United States Coed Softball League.
When then asked about expectations in regards to selling his Nashville home under current market conditions as he prepares to join Adams in Birmingham, Miller surprised well wishers when he replied, "I'm not going anywhere, the position that I have accepted is here in Nashville." Miller then poured another round of Tequila and toasted, "Here's to my new job, and to Christi getting married."
With the announcement of Millers move, we today again see why it is always just a matter of time before we hear that famous cheer.............

Following a week in which Tennessee Titan quarterback Vince Young publicly stated his desire to be traded, it has today been learned that a high level Apple is on the move and will be soon be wearing a new uniform.
Contacted in Houston Texas, Titans owner Bud Adams denied any knowledge or involvement in the breaking news story before pointing out that this would not be the first time that his last name had been erroneously linked to a rumour involving a former Apple.
Mr. Adams then pointed out that when the Nashville based Apples were first sold by founder John Beasley, it was a group in Houston that paid a then record price for the franchise. "Perhaps that has something to do with the confusion today" added Adams as he was peppered for information on the yet to be identified Apple on the move. When then asked what, if anything, he knows about the team that has on occasion been mixed up with his, Adams said although he has never meet anyone from the group, he understands "they know a thing or two about bringing home the cabbage."
As the news of the pending move broke, efforts to reach the Apples were unsuccessful. A recorded message at the teams headquarters said the Apples were participating in charity bike ride from Birmingham, Alabama to the Panhandle of Florida. Callers where then directed to visit the teams website later in the week for an Apple update.
It's now time to hurry up and wait as the Apples appear ready to hit again. As has been thought for a long time, it's not a question of if the Apples will shine again, but instead the question is when. After first shutting down their coed softball operations this Spring, the Apples saw another chapter of their storied history come to an end with this weeks burning of the teams former Headquarters and Training Facility.
The facility, located in the historic Germantown section of Nashville and which was recently put on the American Coed Softball Register of Historic Sites, was all but destroyed in the 3 alarm fire that rang out this week.
"If those walls could talk you would hear a a lot of screaming and swearing" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt when contacted following the blaze. "We took that building and those in it on a heck of a ride over the years" added former Apple Manager Dennis Miller as he struggled to hold back tears when told of the inferno that had swept through the former front offices of the Apples.
Although inconclusive, initial test show the fire perhaps starting in or near the upstairs office of former team owner and CEO John Beasley. One source close to the fire investigation who would only speak on the condition of anonymity, reported that he had heard multiple stories of hot air coming from Beasley's office over the years which may have led to the fire. However added the source, the amount of Bullshit that also came out of some team meetings should have dampened the ground and reduced the chances of this type of thing happening. Attempts to reach Beasley were unsuccessful both in Nashville and at his private resort in the Bahamas.
As has been said before, " You can take away our team and you can take our building, but you will never be able to take our cheer.."

As Spring gives way to Summer, so it appears that change is underway with the Apples. After a multi year run in Nashville, it has been learned that the Apples will soon announce an ambitious plan to take their brand nationally and then eventually globally.
"It's a little early for details" said AG Don Bernitt, "but yea, we have an idea and we are looking at the national and global market."
Initial reports have the Apples deciding on the rapidly expanding Internet networking tool of 'Twitter' as a springboard for their expansion. "That is true" said Bernitt, "you can now follow Apple Tweets at twitter.com/Bernitt
In addition to the Apples global expansion, it has also been learned that we will soon be held hostage to another season of postings involving sports. Coming soon, "Knights Baseball", a 35 and older baseball team fighting for their first league title as part of the Cumberland Valley Adult Baseball League.

Following a lengthy background check which included contact with Apple executives, it has been announced that President Obama and the first family have settled on the Apple mascot, the Portuguese Water Dog to become the First Dog. 'Bo' made his first White House appearance today and has quickly become the center of attention on Pennsylvania Ave and around the country.
For several years, Apple team members and fans have been familiar with the Portie as they have come to love team mascot Bella. A Portuguese Water Dog since birth, Bella has become a fixture over the past few years at Apple Headquarters and has accompanied the Apples to several off the field events.
"She's so sweet" said Apple Christi Copous when asked to comment on Bella. Copous, along with the Woehnker-Todd family of Brentwood, TN have been regular host of Bella when her owner's Don Bernitt and Patty Pender travel on team business.
When last seen on the beaches of Hilton Hilton Head Island, Bella seemed oblivious to the commotion surrounding the Portuguese Water Dog and it's soon to be status of First Dog of the United States.
"I know Bella, and Bo is no Bella" said Bernitt when asked to comment on the high profile addition to the first family. "There is no doubt that the Obamas will love their Portie, they are amazing dogs and I'm sure Bo will be fun to have around. I'm sorry that I'm going to have to get rid of Bella now that her cover has been blown" concluded Bernitt.
When asked if he had any insight for the first family and their new Portie, Bernitt said "they like pizza, macaroni and cheese and a whole lot of attention."
From Nashville to the White House, today belongs to the dogs as they bark in harmony...

With their on again off again season approaching, the Apples are finding new ways to keep busy these days.
In an out of this world example, the Apples this week visited the International Space Station. When asked to comment, AGFHOF Don Bernitt pointed out that it was not a member of the Apple team that made it to the ISS but rather an email.
"Yea, it's pretty cool if you think about it." said Bernitt, "I sent an email to someone on the Space Station and they replied to me." "What's more impressive, the fact that the Space Station is up there, or the fact that I was able to send an email and get a reply?"

After last months announcement that they would suspend softball operations for the 2009 season, it is today being reported that the Apples are back.
Reports out of Nashville say that several prominent local dignitaries possibly including Mayor Dean have been working behind the scenes to keep the Apples intact and on the diamond.
Although efforts to contact the Mayor were unsuccessful, it is believed that Dean made a last minute appeal to the Apples and discussions have led to the Apples willingness to field a team in the Granny White Coed Softball League.
In addition to local efforts to save the Apples, reports have the Apples also receiving bailout money from the Federal Government which may have also played a part in the change of direction.
With the President in Europe this week, it is unclear at this time if the Obama administration will insist that Apple Tony Byram be replaced as manager of the Apples as part of the bailout deal. Efforts to reach Byram were unsuccessful this morning.
Once again, leave it to the Apples to surprise all. With a rich history of excitement and success in their rear view mirrors, could it be that we will again lay witness to another year of Apples Coed Softball glory?

In a sign of the times, it has been learned that the Apples have scheduled a press conference for this weekend to announce that they will suspend operations of the Coed Softball division of their global entity.
A source close to the Apples has confirmed that barring an 11th hour solution, the Apples will forgo tomorrow's league mandated payment of dues thereby ending a 10 year run as one of the most prominent Coed softball teams in Nashville history.
When reached for comment early this morning, a somber AGFHOF Don Bernitt would not comment on reports that the Apples finances had been compromised by disgraced Wall Street executive Bernie Madoff.
Although a connection to Madoff would help answer questions as to why the Apples were so inactive in this past off seasons free agent signing period, additional leaks from the Apple front office are helping paint a picture that shows that the true problem with the Apples is their inability to find enough players to field a team.

APPLES IN FIRE SCARE

In the end it was laughable, in the midst it was nerve wracking. So it was last night at the off season home of AGFHOF Don Bernitt and Apple Patty Pender.
The evening, which started off as any other normal off season night, quickly turned to one of moments of high anxiety and concern when it appeared the Apples Headquarters was on the verge of catching fire.
As is routine, Bernitt was kicking back reviewing game films of last years disappointing season when Pender asked aloud, "what was that?" to which Bernitt replied, "that was a bullshit call by the ump, I was safe!"
A moment later Pender was alerted by something unusual and said again, "what was that". This time Bernitt sat straight up and said, "that was another crappy call, there is no way that ball went over the fence in fair territory, had that umpire called it foul we would have only lost 19 - 0 instead of 21 - 0"
Another few moments passed before Pender and Bernitt both were startled when a loud popping sound accompanied by flashes of blue / green light were observed as the house lost power and went dark.
After gathering a few well placed flashlights, it became apparent that it was only the Apple house that had lost power while the homes on either side remained lite.
And then the fun began, after a few minutes of darkness half of the house had power restored while half remained dark. There was no pattern to the outage as certain pieces of electronic equipment functioned while others and overhead lights remained dead.
"This isn't good" said Bernitt aloud, "we've all heard of electrical fires burning down houses and something is definitely wrong." As they surveyed the situation, Bernitt then said "I smell smoke,we have a problem." It was at the moment that Pender pointed out, "the smoke you smell is coming from the wood burning stove,I THINK!"
Pender and Bernitt then calmly put Evacuation Plan A into action. They scurried about their 4 room mansion as they grabbed the memory sticks from computers and electronic picture frames that hold thousands of pictures accumulated over the years of Apple travels. Along with the sticks, they quickly packed a bag with several changes of clothes before grabbing the Wii Machine and heading outside into the pouring rain.
As tense moments passed, a call was placed to Nashville Electric Company who dispatched an emergency response vehicle to the Apple Palace. Upon arriving, the emergency crew quickly determined that the main power line from the pole to the house had "frayed" and although not completely rendered useless it was the cause for the electrical issues in the house.
"We'll have this fixed in 30 minutes" proclaimed the utility team as they raised the cherry picker into the dark skies of Appleville. Following the rain drenched efforts of the crew, there was heard the shout of "Let there be light" as electricity and calm were restored throughout the house.
"We witnessed a good lesson tonight" said Bernitt as he rebooted his laptop, "everyone needs to make sure that you have fresh batteries in all your smoke detectors and have a plan in the event of fire at your house." Added Bernitt, "talk with your kids and let them know what they need to do in the event of something like this, have a meeting place pre-determined outside and have a 'fire drill' at your house."
In the end, all is well, but don't for a moment think that there weren't some very nerve wracking moments last night for the Apples. As is always the way, Bernitt put it best when he said, "we have our families and friends, the other stuff is just stuff"
It is with relieve that we again can say...... How bout them Apples!

With the off season nearing the halfway point, the Apples kept the hot stove league news coming this weekend by announcing the engagement of Apple Tiffany Smith.
Smith, who has been romantically linked with Bass Master Pro Fisherman Houston McSwain for several years, was beaming with joy as she flashed an apple sized diamond ring that had just been placed on her finger by McSwain.
"No question, I'm the happiest guy around" said McSwain as he fought back tears when asked to tell how he plotted the course that led to his proposal of marriage to Smith.
Added McSwain, " as a professional fisherman, I occasionally have to deal with the one that got away, however the minute I met Tiffany I knew she was a keeper and I'm just glad that I was able to finally reel her in and that she said has said yes to becoming my wife."
"Yea, I fought him off for a while" said Smith in response to McSwain's comments, "but I also realized that he has a really big one and most women can only dream of having a boat that size in their garage" continued the soon to be Tiffany McSwain.
When asked to comment on the news of his teammates engagement, AGFHOF Don Bernitt said, "With all this cold weather we have been subject to lately, it's nice to hear some news that warms the heart."
Bernitt was also asked about the likelihood of Houston McSwain now joining the Apples as a team member to which he replied, "I don't give a darn who you marry or who you know, it all comes down to if you can hit or not." Continued Bernitt, "I've known several great casters over the years and I have yet to see one who can swing a bat with the same skills they flip a jig." "We'll give him a fair tryout and see what he brings to the dug out. If nothing else, we always need someone to carry the cooler."
If he were to make the team, Houston and Tiffany will be part of the wedding train heading down Apple Lane as they would join Apples Scott Quinlin and Sarah Milam who will be also be married during the 2009 season.
If there was ever a time and place for it to be said, what better then now to shout that now famous cheer.. How bout them Apples !

With their off season now in full swing and entering into the coldest days of the year, the Apples today announced that veteran outfielder Patty Pender, who spends her off season as a physical education teacher in Nashville, has been named 2008 Teacher of the Year by TAHPERD - Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Pender was presented the award at the associations annual presidential lunch banquet that was held at the Embassy Suites - Franklin. The award ceremony, attended by over 600 members of the Tennessee chapter of TAHPERD was highlighted by the presentation of the award to Pender following the keynote address by Tennessee Titans starting linebacker David Thorton. Thorton's address to the crowd included several references to individuals like Pender who through their daily actions show and teach the benefits of daily exercise and an overall healthy lifestyle.
"I'm touched, I really am" said Pender when asked for comment following the ceremony. Added Pender, "It's always an honor to be recognized by your peers, and I'm thankful to everyone who played a part in making this day what it was." Pender then spent a few minutes taking photos and signing autographs before heading out of into the brisk November weather to begin her daily exercise routine that is part of the Apples off season training schedule.
When contacted about the award given to Pender, AGFHOF Don Bernitt was quick to say, "I'm really not surprised at all. Patty has for years been one of the leaders of the Apples and I don't think any of our post game get together's would have taken place without her." "Kidding aside" continued Bernitt, "Pender has the energy of a teenager and my hat is off to her. She is a great example of what an active lifestyle has to offer and I'm darn proud to have her as my teammate for life."
And so it goes, the off season continues and the Apples roll on, and to no surprise we again hear that now famous cheer.............................

Go figure, the sun did rise today and the birds are still chirping. Following a long and often bitter presidential campaign (nothing new there), people across the globe today have again witnessed, why despite our shortcomings and problems as a nation,we the people of the United States of America are among the most fortunate people alive.
How great is it that a country of our size and diverse human experiences, can come together under the freedoms provided by our founding fathers and in one day change our government that is in fact, "Of the People, By the People, And for the People"
With the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States, we have continued the process of a peaceful change of power that has been undertaken every four years for over 200 years now.
When contacted at his off season home in suburban Nashville about the election, AGFHOF Don Bernitt commented that "regardless of our individual preferences and regardless how we cast our vote, today we should all sing the song of Lee Greenwood and say, I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free."
Bernitt went on to say, "of course, with last night's peaceful change of power, comes the historic fact that our country has elected it's first Afro-American President, and while it is important on occasion to look back at the past disgrace that is our nations racial history, I feel that it is far more important that we now look forward and realize that all Americans can now live the life that was put forth by Martin Luther King when he spoke of his dream and said, "Free at last, Free at Last, Thank GOD Almighty We Are Free At Last."
Continued Bernitt, as long as I am throwing out quotes, how about this one, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." With that, Bernitt headed to the Apples new training facility in downtown Nashville and joined several other of his teammates as the Apples ramp up their off season conditioning program as they prepare for the 2009 Coed Softball Season.
With the election now over, it's back to the important things in life as we are now a day closer to when we next hear the now famous cheer.....................

With the painfully long Presidential campaign about over, it has been learned that the highly sought after Apple endorsement could come at any time.
Having correctly predicted the last 5 presidential winners, it should come as no surprise that the campaigns of both John McCain and Barack Obama have heavily courted the Apples over the past few months.
In what was initially thought to be a indicator of their intentions, the Apples were spotted this summer in Anchorage, Alaska just weeks before McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. When asked about this visit, AGFHOF Don Bernitt said "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
In has also been reported that the Apples were seen two weeks ago in Pennsylvania on the heels of an Obama - Biden visit to the keystone state. When asked about the visit, AGFHOF Don Bernitt said, "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
When contacted this past weekend about the pending Apple endorsement, Bernitt said that there were a few more details to work out with potential team sponsors before the final announcement is made.
Next up for the Apples will be a first of its kind public service announcement that will have the Apples appearing in a 30 minute TV commercial that will remind all voters that due to the expected heavy voter turnout this year, those Americans planning on voting for John McCain are asked to come to the polls on Tuesday Nov. 4th while those voting for Barack Obama are asked to come to the polls on Wednesday Nov. 5th.
Where we go from here is soon to be seen, but one thing we know for sure is that regardless of the outcome of the election, don't be surprised when during his inaugural speech in January, that our next President yells that now famous cheer...

The Apples 2008 off season tour continued this week with another high octane spectacular at 14,000 feet above ground.
Jumping from the teams private plane, Apple 1, AGFHOF Don Bernitt and Patty Pender each recorded their second career skydive while being joined by Bernitt's father Dan who made his first jump from nearly 3 miles high.
Dan, visiting from his summer home in Central Pennsylvania, was all smiles following his plunge from 14,000 feet, the first two miles of which were a free fall at a speed of nearly 120 mph.
"That was a heck of a ride" said the elder Bernitt after the 5 minute descent to the ground under the canopy of his parachute. "I'm ready to go again" added Bernitt has he described the jump that came just 4 days short of his 77th birthday.
"You gotta tip your hat to him" said Don Bernitt when asked about his dad. "I know people half his age that wouldn't even think about doing what he just did." "I guess this just shows that the Apple doesn't fall far from the tree" continued Bernitt as he began the process of scheduling his next jump.
And so it goes, the Apples off season continues with another film for the highlite reel and another chapter for the book. What's next for the Apples is again any one's guess, but as is always the case don't be surprised when you next hear that cheer...

APPLES CALL FOR CHANGE
You want CHANGE? I'll give you CHANGE!
With the rancor now on display in America during this election cycle, it's dawned on me that I haven't heard much if any talk about a historic factor at play in this election.
To go along with the first Afro - American candidate, and the second female candidate, we also have an election that for the first time in a generation (30 years) the sitting Vice President did not make a run at the Oval Office.
The point? Since historically the VP is a heartbeat or an election cycle away from being President, we need to look at the two VP candidates as if they are going to be a future President of our country.
As we know, Barack Obama has been running for President for the last 6 years which makes him just another politician. He has plotted his course along the way with his ultimate goal of becoming President. Is he in this for America or is he in it for himself?
Joe Biden and John McCain are both career politicians who do nothing but exemplify the reasons for gridlock and bitterness that has permeated our country for the last 10 plus years.
You want CHANGE? Then let's go all the way! Let us go out into the wilderness and find someone who HASN'T been seeking the job of President their entire career and tell them that OUR country is now seeking them.
Sarah Palin is the only one of the four candidates who isn't a professional politician. She embodies what it meant to have Mr. (Mrs.) Smith go to Washington.
America's window of opportunity for CHANGE is now open, it is time to turn our country around and put an end to the same ole, same ole politics that both republicans and democrats have used to wallow around in like pigs at a trough over the years.
So if you want CHANGE, ( hold your nose if you must ) and vote McCain - Palin. By doing so, you will say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and you will be telling 3 of the 4 candidates that "We The People" are taking our country back. It's time to tell Biden, McCain and Obama that being a career politician is no longer to be a career path of choice.
Let's bring back to life the words of John F. Kennedy and "Pass the torch on to a new generation of Americans."

Today we are a country split between right and left, liberal and conservative, republican and democrat, rich and poor. We are split between the laws of GOD and the laws of man.
Today we are a country that can begin to see Martin Luther King's dream. We see our founding fathers were right when they wrote we are all created equal.
Today we are a country that cherishes our freedom of speech, I don't have to agree with you but I will fight till the death to defend your rights to say it.

With just a few weeks of downtime remaining before they begin the rigorous off season training program leading up to the 2009 season, the Apples today have confirmed recent reports that an original Apple is on the move and prepared to prove that lighting does in fact strike twice.
Speaking from his off season home on Hilton Head Island, AGFHOF Don Bernitt confirmed to reporters that original Apple Mary Anderson has agreed to terms with the Birmingham, Al. based Adam's Smashers.
At his hastily arranged briefing on the beaches of HHI, Bernitt said that "truth be known, and for the record, it was Mary Anderson who helped in providing the original spark that led to the Apples taking the field over a decade ago." Bernitt added to the story of Anderson's history with the Apples when he pointed out that in their first season of play the club finished with a record of 0-11. "I'll never forget it" continued Bernitt as he described how following the win less season he was called into the front office and blasted by team ownership. "We used to call it getting Beazed, and boy was I Beazed" chuckled Bernitt as he looked back on the beginning of the storied Apple franchise that in time came to dominate the Nashville landscape like had never been done before nor will ever be again.
Bernitt concluded the impromptu gathering by praising Anderson's past efforts on behalf of the Apples and said that he looked forward to keeping in touch with Anderson as she takes her masterful skills to another venue and joins the Adams team. "I'll say this much" said Bernitt " I'd rather play on her team then against her team, so look out all."
With her move to Adam's, Anderson also will now re-establish contact with former Apples Terry Mattingly and Jeff Hall who recently likewise took their skills first learned as part of the Apples to the friendly confines of the Adams Smashers.

"I'll never forget it" continued Bernitt as he described how following the win less season he was called into the front office and blasted by team ownership. "We used to call it getting Beazed, and boy was I Beazed" chuckled Bernitt as he looked back on the beginning of the storied Apple franchise that in time came to dominate the Nashville landscape like had never been done before nor will ever be again.
Bernitt concluded the impromptu gathering by praising Anderson's past efforts on behalf of the Apples and said that he looked forward to keeping in touch with Anderson as she takes her masterful skills to another venue and joins the Adams team. "I'll say this much" said Bernitt " I'd rather play on her team then against her team, so look out all."
With her move to Adam's, Anderson also will now re-establish contact with former Apples Terry Mattingly and Jeff Hall who recently likewise took their skills first learned as part of the Apples to the friendly confines of the Adams Smashers.
As the summer grows long and a new season draws near do not be surprised when you soon again hear that now famous cheer.....................

The Apples 2008 Summer Tour stopped for a moment this week to celebrate the birth of the newest Apple, Vivian Rae Richardson. Ms Richardson, the 2nd daughter and 4th child of Scott and Natalie Richardson entered the world last Thursday August 14th in time to watch her first Tennessee Titans game on TV from the cozy confines of her mothers arms.
"We're tickled" said the proud father Scott Richardson in between his phone calls to local Nashville sports talk shows which is part of his regular routine. Richardson, who played shortstop for the Apples in their inaugural season of 1998 gleamed from ear to ear when asked to describe his feelings surrounding the birth of VR. "She's precious" added mom Natalie as she smiled at sons Sam, Henry and daughter Marin as they gazed in wonderment at their baby sister.
With Vivian now at home with her family, the obvious question to be asked of Scott and Natalie will they make a run at "one for the thumb" and add child number 5 to the team in the next few years.

In breaking news from the United States Air Force Academy, it was today announced that future Apple Michael Oliver, nephew of AGFHOF Don Bernitt, has earned and been awarded the distinct honor of becoming an Instructor Pilot in the United States Air Force.
The title of an IP or Instructor Pilot is without question never given,it can only be earned. By virtue of his accomplishment Oliver has proven that he has mastered the skills of flying himself and is now trusted to teach others.
Although not yet confirmed, early reports are that at the age of 18 Oliver may well in fact be the youngest Instructor Pilot in the Air Force. As a Cadet 3rd class (sophomore) at the Air Force Academy, Oliver will take the yoke of his TG-10B glider and begin teaching his fellow cadets the art and skill and flying.
When contacted for comment Oliver said that he would like to thank his dad, Retired Air Force Pilot Kris Oliver, and mom Gail Romayne Oliver for the support and guidance they provided him during his early years of flying.
Oliver's early morning phone interview was then cut short when the power went off and all that could be heard were the shouts of "Emergency, Emergency, everybody get up."
Attempts to reach Oliver again were unsuccessful and it is most likely that he had headed off to soar "Into The Wild Blue Yonder"

The Apples 2008 off season summer tour was rocked to its foundation this weekend when it was learned the starting pitcher Greg Swafford was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in suburban Nashville.
Swafford was life flighted to Vanderbilt Hospital following the late Saturday afternoon accident where it was determined that he broke 5 ribs and came within millimeters of puncturing a lung. Swafford also sustained a partial dislocation and deep bruise to his pitching shoulder.
In addition to the serious injuries to his torso, Swafford suffered a mild concussion that resulted in the forming of blood pockets in his eye sockets. "Thank GOD he was wearing a helmet" said an unidentified nurse on duty at the Vanderbilt Emergency Room.
Showing the true grit that has always been his style, Swafford insisted on going home Sunday and told reporters while leaving the hospital that after a time to heal he would begin rehab and vowed to pitch for the Apples again next season. "I may be banged up right now but even in this condition I'm better then our second string pitcher AGFHOF Don Bernitt" said Swafford as he flipped the V for victory sign and climbed into a private ambulance sent by the Apples front office to take him home.
And so it goes, the beginning of a long off season of rehab for Swafford and the real reason behind the that cheer.......

Long Ride To Tennessee

"The 7 1/2 hour overnight flight comes with the territory" said Apple Patty Pender as she sat in a zombie like state at the Atlanta airport this morning following her long flight from Anchorage, Alaska in route back to Tennessee.
The flight was the beginning to the end of what turned out to be an amazing trip to Alaska as part of the Apples 2008 Summer Tour. The Apples boarded their flight at 8:00 p.m. local Alaska time ( 11:00 p.m. Nashville time )for the long flight east as they first headed towards the night skies of the western United States before finally chasing the rising sun over Atlanta and the eastern United States.
"That really sucked" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt as he waited in Atlanta for the Apples connector flight back to their familiar confines in Nashville. "But, it's pretty much been par for the course this last week" continued Bernitt as he tried to describe the feelings of constant daylight, lack of sleep and time zone jumping that were experienced during the 10 day Apple tour of Alaska.
The Apples trip can be best described as awesome. Along with visits to Eskimo villages over the Arctic Circle and hikes through the Grizzly Bear infested territory of Denali National Park, the Apples also had the very special pleasure to visit multiple glaciers while at Kenaji Fjords National Park as well as take a simply spectacular 4 plus hour train ride through the splendor of the Alaskan Mountain Range. In addition to the train trip, the Apples took several flightseeing trips including a flight that took them within a few hundred feet of the 20,000 ft summit of Mt. McKinley. "That was an amazing sight" said Bernitt when asked to describe the ride to the summit of North America's tallest mountain peak. Along with the flight to Denali, another highlight of the trip was without question a very rare visit to the Upper Falls of the Brooks River in the Aleutian Islands. It was at Brooks Camp that the Apples sat in awe as they watched Grizzly Bears sitting in the river as they waited on the King Salmon to swim up stream and jump into the falls in an effort to return to their breeding grounds. With 1.5 million salmon making the run each year, there were plenty of fish for the 15 Grizzlies that were in and along the shores of the river. "No words to describe this" said Pender as she watched the bears in the dance of life and death that they share each year with the salmon.
When asked for additional details on the Apples trip, an exhausted Pender said, "let me get home and decompress and then I'll get back to you on it. Bernitt added, "I heard it put this way and it sums everything up for me; the United States isn't 500 hundred or a thousand years old. We don't have pyramids or castles to look at in our country but without doubt we do have amazing natural beauty. From the Colorado Rockies to the Grand Canyon, from Yellowstone and Alaska. It's all around us, I encourage all to go, do and see whenever and wherever possible.
With that the call was made and the Apples headed to gate B-17 and the last leg of their trip, a quick 1 hour flight from Atlanta to Nashville. If nothing else, you can be sure that after a period to adjust back to their normal day to day in Tennessee, that we will soon likely hear again that now famous cheer.....

Summer Goodwill Tour Continues

The Apples 2008 Summer Tour is now in full stride with no sign of slowing down soon. As special guest of the Inapuik Eskimos, the Apples Alaskan summer tour began with a flight over the Arctic Circle to the Top of the World as they attempted to join the Polar Bear club by swimming in the Arctic Ocean. However, it must be reported that the Apples were denied their attempt as they were unable to make it to their planned final destination when their private plane, Apple 1, was forced by heavy fog to land short of the ocean.
"Yea, I was a little disappointed about that" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt when asked to comment about the day. "But then again" added Bernitt, "We made it over the Arctic Circle and were able to spend some time with the Inapuiks at Coldfoot Camp so it wasn't a total bust"
Following the return flight to Fairbanks, the Apples were all about play as they experienced the phenomena of what is known as 'The Land Of The Midnight Sun' "It really can't be explained" said Apple Patty Pender as she loaded her golf clubs into her golf cart as she began a round of golf at 10:30 p.m. "It's the middle of the night and you would think it was the middle of day. The sun is very high in the sky and their is no reason to believe it's actually near midnight"
"The experience of the Midnight Sun is awesome" added Bernitt as he pointed out that it is very hard to know when to go to sleep. "The brain is amazing, with no darkness and nothing but bright sunshine, it's very easy to get caught up in the surroundings around you and before you know it is 3 o'clock in the morning and you haven't slept for 22 or 23 hours." "Looking back" continued Bernitt, "this would have been a great place to grow up. Just think, your parents couldn't tell you to be home by dark because there is no such thing at this time of year"
Following a few days in the great north of Fairbanks and beyond, the Apples trip continued with a visit to Denali National Park which is home to the North American continents tallest mountain, Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley. At over 20,000 ft high, Denali simply must be seen to be described. "Some people say I have my head in the clouds, but this lady called Denali takes the cake on that line" said Bernitt as he gazed upon the mountains of the national park.
As is their way, the Apples then left the comfort of the highways as they packed their day packs a set off on a 4 hour hike through the tundra and across the river beds that snake through Denali. Not to be missed was that fact that as they hiked the Apples were fully aware that they were now out of the safety of their element and walking through the homeland of the American Grizzly Bear. "Yea, it's not for the faint of heart said Bernitt" as he and Pender were joined by his sister Diane and nieces Lisa and Lauren.
"This is the last time that I will ever go on vacation with Don and Patty" said the visibly shaken Diane Bernitt as she climbed her way up a steep hill and through the hip deep brush that led the Apples out of the riverbed and to the relative safety of the gravel road to wait on a bus to take them out of the wilderness and back to camp. "Can we do that again tomorrow chimed Lisa and Lauren" as they poured water out of their soaked shoes following the last river crossing of the day.
On the subject of rivers, it was then off to the raging Nenana River for a 2 hour whitewater rafting trip that saw the Apples joined by Penders parents Jo and Bob for the ride of a lifetime in the 38 degree waters of the glacier fed Nenana. "Oh my!" said Jo Pender when asked to describe the 12 mile journey through the canyons of Denali.
Next up for the Apples, weather permitting, will be a flightseeing trip that is scheduled to fly them near the summit of Mt McKinley for a tour of the Alaskan range and a glacier landing high in the mountains. Again, and however, it doesn't look good as heavy clouds have moved into the area and grounded most flights. "Lets just see what happens over the next few hours" said Bernitt as he sipped coffee and enjoyed the chilly morning in the small town of Talkeetna on the outskirts of Denali Park.
And so it is, the Apples 2008 Summer Tour continues as they leave their mark on America's 50th state, Alaska. One thing to be said for sure is that whether it be night time or not, you more then likely will soon again hear that now famous cheer...

Less then one week removed from their 2008 Coed Softball campaign, the Apples have begun their off season tour in a dazzling way.
As seen on ESPN this weekend, Apple associate Houston McSwain was front and center on ESPN as he stared at this past weekends Bass Master Nashville Pro Fishing Tournament.
McSwain, the longtime confidant and roommate of Apple second baseman Tiffany Smith was in high heaven this past weekend as he joined the nations elite bass fisherman in the tournament held on Nashville's Old Hickory Lake.
"It's always nice to fish in front of the home crowd" said McSwain as he was interviewed following the two day tournament on his home lake. "I know several of these fish by first name and that helps once the jig hits the water" added McSwain.
For those Apple fans who missed the live coverage on ESPN, the tournament will be rebroadcast in High Definition on July 5th. Check your local listings for the time and channel in your area.

THE END OF THE APPLES
Apples Bounced From Playoffs
Teams Future Is Uncertain

It was a lousy end to a lousy season for the Apples last night as they were thumped out of the Granny White Coed Softball League playoffs in the opening round.
"I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the way this season played out" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt as he packed the bats and balls away for the last time of 2008.
When it was over, last nights game was a microcosm of the Apples entire season. They in spurts showed glimpses of greatness as was made evident by the hitting of Greg Swafford and the defensive play of out fielder John Jones. Swafford and Jone's performances combined with the tenacity and hustle of Tiffany Smith showed why the Apples in the past had earned the reputation of a team that you did not want to play. However, as was the case throughout the season, this years Apples were unable to pull it all together as a team when it counted the most.
"That is what disappoints me the most" said Bernitt as he looked back on the season that was. " There is no doubt in my mind that if you look up and down our lineup we had the makings of a very good team. It just seems that some folks just didn't want to be here at times this year and it showed by the way we played."
Bernitt continued, "Ultimately I am responsible for the what happens on the field each week and I apologize for the crappy show we put on this year." " I promise you this" continued Bernitt, " this will never happen again." Bernitt's comments again fueled speculation that with last nights season ending lost we have seen the end of the Apples. All season reports have pointed to the strong likelihood that the Apples will dissolve the storied franchise and all that will remain are the faint memories and illusions that were the Apples.
When asked to comment on the future of the Apples Bernitt said, "I'll put it this way, if... and that is a big big if....if we play again next year we will be starting at square one. By that I mean, as of now their is nobody on this team period! All positions are open and nobody other then myself is guaranteed a spot on this roster."
Although we would not comment directly, reports have surfaced that Bernitt has been in discussions with players from both Detroit MI and Hermitage TN and that it is possible that the talk of the end of the Apples may in fact be a smoke screen to the true story of the behind the scenes discussions that are already underway that will involve several high profile additions to the 2009 Apples.
As with past seasons, the Apples have announced that they will hold a special news conference in the near future to announce this years MVP's and bring the season to it's official close. Unlike past seasons, it is a tough guess as to who will bring home the hardware based on the already mentioned underachieving performances on the team.
In off the field news, when asked what was in store for the off season and what to expect from the Apples 2008 Summer Tour, Bernitt told listeners "like the rest of you, I'm paying extra attention to oil and gas prices right now so with that in mind I have decided to take a trip to visit ANWAR (Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge) and see for myself what all the fuss is about when it comes to drilling for oil in Northern Alaska." Bernitt will leave in a few weeks for Alaska and said that it is not at of the realm of possibilites that he might find a player or two during his side trip over the Arctic Circle to the shores of the Arctic Ocean and the top of the world. " From what I've heard, there are some guys who swing a mean club up there" said Bernitt.
And so it is and was. The 2008 Apples Coed Softball season is over and in the history books. What happens next is any ones guess, but if you listen carefully during these long summer nights do not be surprised if you hear the faint echo of that now famous cheer................................

It was a lousy end to a lousy season for the Apples last night as they were thumped out of the Granny White Coed Softball League playoffs in the opening round.
"I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the way this season played out" said AGFHOF Don Bernitt as he packed the bats and balls away for the last time of 2008.
When it was over, last nights game was a microcosm of the Apples entire season. They in spurts showed glimpses of greatness as was made evident by the hitting of Greg Swafford and the defensive play of out fielder John Jones. Swafford and Jone's performances combined with the tenacity and hustle of Tiffany Smith showed why the Apples in the past had earned the reputation of a team that you did not want to play. However, as was the case throughout the season, this years Apples were unable to pull it all together as a team when it counted the most.
"That is what disappoints me the most" said Bernitt as he looked back on the season that was. " There is no doubt in my mind that if you look up and down our lineup we had the makings of a very good team. It just seems that some folks just didn't want to be here at times this year and it showed by the way we played."
Bernitt continued, "Ultimately I am responsible for the what happens on the field each week and I apologize for the crappy show we put on this year."
